Take Responsibility for Reproduction and Overpopulation

Printed 3-27-01

To the Editor: I hear people complain about overcrowding in our local schools quite often. It amuses me to listen to the "conspiracy theories" some people construct. To explain why brand-new schools have numerous trailers surrounding them, I heard one man launch into a detailed explanation of how "they" deliberately and deceitfully under-build during construction so that the voters will approve more funds each year. It’s all a scam, he claimed. This just shows the incredible lengths to which we go to delude ourselves and deny the truth.

There is one simple reason for overcrowding in schools, as well as traffic congestion, urban sprawl, and most destruction of the environment: overpopulation. We keep breeding like rabbits with no concern for the type of world we’re leaving our children.

Here’s an idea: Want to "share the joy of life" with someone else, carry on your family name or "have a physical manifestation of the love" shared between you and your partner? Then adopt. There are more than 100,000 children in this country who need loving parents. When you adopt, you help out one child at the expense of none. When you breed, you gratify your self-centered reasons for procreating at the expense of all.

So the next time you feel the need to gripe about one of the many issues caused by overpopulation, put your money where your mouth is and get a vasectomy or tubal ligation.
